Background
Inadequate health care and long delays in obtaining care during obstetric emergencies are major contributors to high maternal death rates in Tanzania.
Intervention study by CARE and CDC from 1997-2002 addressed 1) volunteer village healthcare workers 2) community-based maternal and peri-natal surveillance systems, and 3) emergency medical transport systems in northwestern Tanzania
Overview of Current Study
Assess sustainability of community-based public health initiatives in northwestern Tanzania.
